Do they come with the lock here as well? Are they all produced like that, or is it just a US liability thing? Mine is a few years old and Euro sourced so has no lock.

RB,

All S&W's of modern manufacture (just revolvers not metal-framed pistols and their 1911s) feature an IL. Their "dash no.", which is -6 means that it contains MIM parts (namely hammer & trigger) and an IL. Previous generations didn't have an IL.

And yes, it's just a US liability thing. Many shooters are concerned about it since it could lock up the gun, especially when shooting "full-house" magnum loads. But since our Smiths are mainly "range-toys", it's not that much of a concern. Carrying the key would be a good idea, though, even when shooting "thirty-eights".

Your 686-4 dates back to more than just a few years ago. It features a hammer-mounted firing pin, forged hammer & trigger and no internal lock. Late-90's would be my guess.
