Opinions on a scope / optic for a SIG 551
« on: February 08, 2015, 11:17:39 AM » by RF11
Got a SIG 551 which needs an optic any type looking for input.

Had an Aimpoint comp M4 but it migrated to another rifle.

The upper has removable picattiny rail section and fixed sights, so i ask what are my options?

Hi Rob
Why not consider the IOR 3x25N optic with integrated base.
Fits right away on the SIG rail and should give you perfect aligned eye relief.
The IOR has an MP8 reticle and is also available with 223Rem BDC turrets.
Discounted Selling price Euro 810.00c

The 3x mag on this optic is absolutely fine even at close range targets since it is extremely clear (typical of IOR lenses) and has a very tolerant eye relief.

Well I did want a do all optic with some say 6x magnification, but at the same time want a red dot speed on 1x magnification so something like an Acog piggyback or 1-6/8x mag scope.

As for price looking more for value than anything else, but not sure that is why i want to see my options.

That IOR is super clear glass, I had seen it at the shop but wanted a bit more magnification, or the option to drop to 1x mag.

You know quite well that the IOR are value for money.
Next in line then is the IOR 1.5-8x26 35mm SFP TRIDENT.

The PITBULL looks promising.

But that Trident looks amazing.

RD with magnification (x4 enough) will cost more than the gun.
Elcan make a couple.

i would wait for this one from vortex
http://www.vortexoptics.com/category/strike_eagle_riflescopes

that is specific for the 5.56 calibre, you can shoot from point blank distance out o 500 or more , it is still new , but vortex got a good reputaion for a reasonable price,

when buying optics first you need to know the budget you have in mind ,and  what is the purpose, it is better to buy a good optics once than buy cheap optics for evey rifle you have

I though about Elcan but they seem a bit pricey 2000+.

I was thinking in the 1000 range maybe going up a bit.

As for how far I may be shooting well a 5.56 be expected to go out to 400m reliably so something in that range even though we lack the ranges.

Understood.
You are in the same pickle as everyone else.
No doubt, a nice red dot at zero mag is excellent for instinctive fast shots, but also good to have some magnification beyond 200m or so.
Unfortunately there is no cheap solution.
So much so that most users compromise:
Stick with x1 RD and have close up speed , or get some magnification and still shoot with both eyes open, at close ranges.

There are some good glass variables now.....1-4 or 1-6, but they are  not really RD sights.
You can get an aimpoint or eotech + magnifier, but then its clunky solution ( might fit the whole 551 rail) and you could spend close to 1800 e.

I would compromise with either a RD , with SMALL dot ( 2moa ? will make it easier at longer ranges).
Or a good 1-4 scope with illuminated reticle.

Just came up on this... Some interesting technology...............http://www.osagecountyguns.com/blog/optics/details-on-sigs-new-electro-optics-line/?_bta_tid=3.hJI.CjtK3w.C6cR.7gul..AeS1UA.b..l.BDve.a.VN5wUA.VN7X6Q.EXhZBQ&_bta_c=hox4vskywat62g283tjt86qbz5xef

Someone with experience once said "Will conqueres skill".
If not even skill is up there at the top, you can draw your own take therefore just how low in the equation equipment actually figures.

Just saying.

Well here is the thing I am a bit of a brand snob.

What I need and what I want are 2 different things, but after some consideration I think a red dot on a 13.7 inch barrel 5.56mm non freefloat Sig551 makes more sense than a magnified optic.

Which means I will probably stick the aimpoint comp m4 back on the SIG.

Which leaves my freefloat HBAR 14.5 AR15 needing an optic and that has far more mounting options, including the ability to mount offset 45 degree sights. Plus it is my no 1 rifle to take to the range.

So new question how much is an ELCAN?  Cool

Elcan variables, 2000 to 3000.
Source and model depending.

I have heard of some other brand name, red dot variables, but cant recall the name right now.
However the fact that so very few manufacturers field such scopes is proof that they are a headache to make reliable.

Yep found the prices on a German site, 2,750 for the 1x/4x variable and 3,500 for the 1.4x/6x variable. Way too expensive.
